Are you tuned into the right news for CRE? Check out these local sources.

Sep 25, 2018

News-laptopWhether it’s prospecting or navigating market trends, top brokers know you need to be informed if you want to get ahead.

Major news sources like Bloomberg, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal can help keep you up to date on global and national business developments, but they don’t typically cover local news. And for most brokers, understanding local changes in your market is the most important thing of all.

To help brokers stay on top of the deals and trends in their market, we decided to put together a list showcasing some of the best places to find local CRE news in three top markets across the country. If you do business in New York City, San Francisco or Houston, check out these sites to keep tabs on the deals and trends shaping your market. (And many of these organizations have regional outlets in different cities, so search for your own if you’re not in one of these areas.)

The best news? If you use Apto, this news pulls automatically into your CRM

1. New York

Globe St. New York: Skip the national page and follow Globe St. New York to focus on CRE news in the five boroughs. From Lexington Realty’s $726 million office portfolio sale to WeWork’s growing appetite for space, this is one of the best places to keep tabs on everything happening in NYC.

They typically publish between three and five stories a day, and if you’re looking for CRE news across the Hudson, don’t worry — they have a site for New Jersey, too.

Bisnow NYC: Bisnow’s national homepage is one of the best places to get CRE news. On a local level, their market-specific sites are goldmines. Bisnow’s NYC page focuses on deals, high-profile personnel changes and market trends, along with a smattering of national stories thrown in to keep things interesting.

Expect around two or three breaking stories a day and a weekly deal sheet to help you keep track of where the money is going in your market.

Crain’s New York Business: From local CRE news highlighting which parts of the city are bustling with development to opinion pieces discussing regulatory problems between the city and the industry, Crain’s New York is an important source of local news.

Crain’s New York Business consistently pumps out two to three CRE stories everyday. The site also covers news impacting everything from small businesses to the finance sector.

2. San Francisco

Curbed San Francisco: For a fun mix of neighborhood insights and CRE news, look no further than Curbed. The site’s San Francisco page covers everything from Facebook’s Menlo Park expansion to the region’s housing crisis.

Expect about four articles a day and occasional maps showing just how unaffordable the Bay Area is.

Bisnow San Francisco: Similar to Curbed, the theme of the day on Bisnow’s San Francisco outpost often centers around the Bay Area’s affordable housing shortage. Scan this site to keep track of the market’s biggest deals and players, like Compass’ recent acquisition of Pacific Union International.

Bisnow San Francisco puts out anywhere from one to three articles a day.

San Francisco Business Times: The San Francisco Business Times is a great source of Bay Area CRE news. From Jamestown’s $40 million 660 Market St. buy to interviews with local construction leaders, check out this publication to stay on top of changes in your market.

While they sometimes post stories from other sources like The New York Times, you can expect them to churn out between one and two CRE articles a day.

3. Houston

Houston Business Journal: Like the San Francisco Business Times, the Houston Business Journal is part of the Business Journals family and delivers high quality regional news, covering everything from CRE to Food & Lifestyle topics. Come here for local industry news, like the status of Chevron’s Bellaire campus sale or coworking’s spread into Houston.

For CRE news, expect between two and three articles a day.

Bisnow Houston: Whether it’s thinking about how Houston should position itself in regard to the other big Texan cities or reading through the weekly Deal Sheet, local brokers shouldn’t neglect Bisnow’s Houston page. Like the other Bisnow local pages, Bisnow Houston focus on local CRE news while mixing in some of the most relevant national pieces.

You can count on at least two, if not three, CRE-specific articles here everyday.

Houston Chronicle: The Houston Chronicle is a treasure trove of local business news. The site has a dedicated real estate section, which combines residential and CRE news. The publication also runs a “Deal of the Week” special to showcase the market’s largest deals every week.

Expect anywhere from two to four real estate stories a day here.
